The Bainbridge Island Police Department is buying two BMW motorcycles from the Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribe so the city can start its own motorcycle unit.

The two motorcycles were not used much by the tribe. Both are 2009 BMW GS650 models; one has been on the road for 78 miles, and the other, 172 miles.

The motorcycles will cost the city $10,000, plus sales tax.

City officials said the bikes are “patrol ready” and will allow Bainbridge officers to start police motorcycle patrol training this spring.

While officials had first considered buying an electric motorcycle for police, Bainbridge Chief Matthew Hamner told the council at its meeting earlier this month that the electric models needed further technology refinements before they could by used by police and would not be a sound investment.

The deal for two motorcycles would also allow the department to use one for training, he said.

Council members approved the purchase of the BMW motorcycles at their meeting last week.
