A Bainbridge Island man was arrested after he allegedly assaulted two elderly women and barricaded himself in his home near Wallace Way late Monday.

A Bainbridge officer responding to a report of an assault near the Doctors Clinic on Hildebrand Lane noticed a man screaming from a window of a residence near Wallace Way.

The man, police said, was later identified as Adrian Allan Charvet. Police said Charvet, 25, assaulted two women he did not know who were outside the clinic Monday afternoon.

The women received serious injuries in the attack, and one was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle with head injuries.

“We’re not clear yet on the extent of her injuries, and they are pretty severe,” said Bainbridge Police Chief Matthew Hamner.

Hamner said a rookie officer on the way to the assault report saw people near a residence near Wallace Way and Ericksen Avenue and a man who was yelling out a window. The man then began yelling at the officer.

Other units were called to the scene, and Hamner said the man barricaded himself inside his home.

Police tried to talk to the man over a bullhorn, and a negotiator was called in as officers tried to convince the man to surrender.

The standoff lasted nearly three hours, and more than a dozen police cars jammed the neighborhood.

After he wouldn’t come out, a SWAT team from the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office was called in to get Charvet out of the residence. Police moved in once a warrant was obtained.

The man surrendered after members of the SWAT team broke a window to gain entry to the home, and other officers were able to get a key to the man’s apartment.

“After the warrant was obtained and negotiations failed, the SWAT team began to make entry,” Hamner said.

“At that point he became cooperative,” Hamner said. “I think he realized it was time to cooperate.”

Charvet was arrested and charged with assault. Hamner said he was then booked into Kitsap County Jail.

Hamner said subsequent interviews with the man “helped us resolve several other crimes on the island.”

Hamner said more information on the case would be available later.

The assault that happened before the standoff appeared to be random.

The two women who were attacked did not know the man.

“We don’t understand it. We are perplexed. We cannot comprehend why he would assault the two older ladies,” Hamner said.

“We have no reason to believe he knew them,” Hamner said.
