A 32-year-old Bainbridge Island man was charged with second-degree assault Thursday in Kitsap County District Court after he allegedly shot at a man with a high-powered air gun and hit him in the head during a dispute over an unpaid debt.

Patrick M. Barnes was arrested Wednesday in Poulsbo and booked into Kitsap County Jail on $50,000 bail.

According to court documents, police were called to the 1200 block of NW Finn Hill Road in Poulsbo just after 10:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 10 and found a man standing next to a vehicle with 10 bullet holes in the windshield.

The man was upset and shaking and was bleeding from the left side of his head.

The man told police he had run into a man named Pat at the Walmart earlier, and Pat told the man he owed him money. The man then left for Finn Hill Road to fetch tools to fix a woman’s flat tire, and Pat followed him on his skateboard.

The man said they then argued over money and Pat shot his BB gun at the man’s vehicle and then aimed the gun at his head and shot at the driver’s side of the windshield.

One bullet went through the windshield and grazed the top of the man’s head.

A deputy on patrol in the area found a man matching Pat’s description on Rasmussen Court.

The man, identified as Barnes, told police he had been at Walmart and ran into a man who owed him $150 for work he had done for him.

After they went to a friend’s house, Barnes told police the man didn’t have the money but tried to give him an Umarex BB gun as payment.

Barnes said he argued with the man and said he didn’t want he gun, and that he put the gun on the roof of the vehicle.

He also said he noticed bullet holes in the windshield, and the man who owed him money tried to run him over, but he was able to get out of the way.

Barnes then allegedly said the man drove away and he decided to walk over to his ex-girlfriend’s house.

Police searched Barnes’ backpack and found an Umarex .177 air pistol, drug paraphernalia, needles and a heroin kit. The gun did not have any marks on it that looked like it had fallen off the top of a moving vehicle.
