The Bainbridge Island City Council will consider a proclamation Wednesday that will recognize Monday, Jan. 20, 2014 as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

The Bainbridge Island City Council will consider a proclamation Wednesday that will recognize Monday, Jan. 20, 2014 as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

The city’s recognition would match federal and state legislation which honors King’s birth, life, death and message of equality for all people.

King was born Wednesday, Jan. 15, 1929. Before his death, King led the Civil Rights Movement through peaceful action. In the 1963 March on Washington he delivered a historic speech at the Lincoln Memorial which called for an end to racism in the U.S.

By recognizing Jan. 20 as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the city encourages citizens to reflect on King’s legacy and continue his vision by respecting others.

City council will discuss the proclamation during the new business portion of the agenda at 8:25 p.m.

The council meets at 7 p.m. every Wednesday in city hall.
