Jail death

An inmate scheduled to be released from the Kitsap County Jail the morning of July 3 was found dead in her room, a release from the sheriff’s office says.

The 46-year-old woman had been arrested by Bremerton police June 30 on a charge of fourth-degree assault linked to a domestic violence case.

The woman has been identified as Rhonda L. McKelvy. Dr. Lindsey Harle, chief medical examiner, said the autopsy shows cause of death was a subarachnoid hemorrhage, due to a ruptured cerebral aneurysm. KCSO said that inmates found her unresponsive inside her room, and jail staff arrived and attempted to revive her with CPR.

Easier fixes

Bainbridge Island has an online tool called SeeClickFix to help things like potholes get repaired.

There is a drop-down menu of various issues, such as graffiti or illegal dumping, and then you can mark where the problem is on a map. City manager Blair King says in his weekly newsletter that some issues take longer to fix than others—such as removing a dead animal is faster than investigating a code violaion—but that all concerns will receive a response.

Winslow plan

Two community visioning workshops will take place regarding the Winslow Subarea Plan.

July 20 from 6-8 p.m. an in-person meeting will take place at City Hall. July 26 at the same time there will be a Zoom meeting.

Studio tour

The 23rd annual Summer Studio Tour on Bainbridge Island takes place Aug. 11-13 as 43 artists will showcase their work in five local artists’ studios with original, hand-crafted art.

Each artist has to be juried, so the artwork is high quality and original, reflecting the “hand and spirit of the artist.” And each artist is present, so visitors can hear about their techniques, style, and inspiration. Look for a variety of work on display, including garden art, watercolors, jewelry, pottery, acrylics, fused glass, wearables, metal sculpture, India ink, mixed media, photography, encaustics and more.

The free self-guided tour is from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. that Friday and Saturday, ending an hour earlier that Sunday. For photos of each artist’s work and bios, along with a map of the studios and event details, go to www.bistudiotour.com

Command change

Naval Support Activity (NSA) Naples hosted a change of command and retirement ceremony July 7 onboard the ship Capodichino.

Capt. John Randazzo relieved Capt. James Stewart of Suquamish as commanding officer of NSA Naples, Italy. The ceremony featured Rear Adm. Brad Collins, commander, Navy Region Europe, Africa, Central. Collins praised Stewart, saying, “You have deftly, like a skilled statesman, balanced the breadth and depth of priorities to keep this installation running at peak performance.”

Collins credited Stewart with leading the base through the COVID-19 pandemic while managing Capodichino, Support Site, Gaeta, Carney Park and supporting Joint Forces Command Naples. “For any other commander this might have seemed like an overwhelming task, but the NSA Naples team is the most professional installation in the region,” Collins added.

Stewart said, “NSA Naples has presented me with a unique opportunity to work with active duty, civilians, local nationals, and partnering nations. The diversity amongst our staff and partners presents a new culture and philosophy that you, as a leader, must adjust yourself to because true leaders bend themselves to the organization. From a personal development standpoint, it is unrivaled compared to anything else I have done in the military and it has changed me for the better as a leader.”
