SATURDAY, AUG. 20

12:47 p.m. A 52-year-old Bainbridge man reported his mailbox had been destroyed by a car in a hit-and-run incident.

He estimated the cost to replace it would be between $200 and $300.

1:25 p.m. Police were called to a private residence where an 88-year-old Bainbridge woman had been the victim of repeated telephone scams.

The woman’s daughter said the elderly woman had been so fooled by the scam artist that she would argue with family members who tried to stop her from sending him more money.

The woman explained that she had received many phone calls from a man with a strong accent who said his name was Joe. He told her she was the winner of a contest with grand prize winnings in excess of $500,000, but the money could not be accessed until fees and taxes were paid. She sent him two money orders totaling $1,638. She could not recall the final destination of the money and did not have copies of the money orders either.

The woman continued to receive calls from Joe for weeks afterward, and, on Aug. 1, she withdrew $1,090 from her bank account to send him. He had told her to place the money inside magazines and to send those magazines to various addresses. She ultimately sent money hidden inside magazines to locations in Tonasket, Washington, Chicago, Illinois, Chattanooga, Tennessee and Greenwood, South Carolina.

The woman’s daughter had been unaware of these goings on, she said, until her mother tried to take out a cash advance on her credit card for $3,500 from a joint account.

That money was reclaimed by the woman’s daughter and not sent to Joe.

11:46 p.m. Police pursued — but ultimately lost sight of — a rider on a dark-colored “crotch rocket” style motorcycle, which they saw speeding near Day Road and Miller Road.

Police followed the motorcycle, which continued to speed westbound on Day Road and south on Miller Road. The driver was crossing the center line as well, and the pursuing officers activated their car’s lights and siren at the intersection of Miller Road and Arrow Point Drive, though the motorcycle continued on. The driver failed to stop at a stop sign at the intersection of Miller Road and Fletcher Bay Road and still not did pull over, but in fact proceeded to speed up to approximately 90 mph near Island Center Road.

Police kept in pursuit, but lost track of the speeder at Fletcher Bay Road and Vincent Road while headed toward Lynwood. Police were unable to locate the bike in the area and were unable to record a license plate number.

FRIDAY, AUG. 19

7:48 p.m. Police responded to a private residence on Gilmore Way after two different neighbors called to complain that the resident there was causing a disturbance.

Police said that within 15 minutes of arriving, they heard a woman shouting obscenities at least three times. Officers had responded to this same address regarding similar disturbances “many times,” and the woman had been warned about such behavior before.

The woman was cited and told that if she did it again in the next 24 hours the citation would become a criminal infraction.
