Bainbridge blotter | A stranger on the road

Selected reports from the Bainbridge Island Police Department blotter.

TUESDAY, DEC. 13

3:24 p.m. Police responded when a 29-year-old Poulsbo man driving a 1989 Mazda pickup truck struck a utility pole near North Madison Avenue and Torvanger Road. They found the vehicle locked and empty upon arrival. A nearby resident told the officers that the driver said he was going to walk to Highway 305 to contact his father. Skid marks behind the vehicle indicated to police that it had drifted to the side of the road and then gone straight for about 50 feet before the impact. A tow truck was called when the driver did not return.

Less than an hour later, the driver was located walking along Hidden Cove Road. He was transported back to the scene. The driver claimed he’d been on his way home from work when he saw a bus and a car stopped in the road and swerved around them and into the pole. The man had no driver’s license and said he had no insurance. He was cited and the vehicle was impounded.

9:25 p.m. A 26-year-old Bainbridge woman was arrested after being pulled over for suspicion of driving under the influence and it was discovered she did have not have a license or car insurance. Police did find, however, an open misdemeanor warrant for the woman in Seattle.

10:34 p.m. Police were called to a private residence on Alder Avenue about a possible burglary in progress. The resident, a 20-year-old female, told police she’d come home from a movie and heard a rattling at the back door. She saw a man outside. She said the man did not see her and left when he found the door was locked.

The woman said she had seen a stranger walking along the road the past few nights, though could not be sure it was the same man.
