A bicycle rider was hit by a commuter transit bus early Tuesday morning on Highway 305 on the north end of Bainbridge Island.

The bike rider sustained serious injuries in the accident, which happened at approximately 6 a.m. Nov. 3, and was taken by the Bainbridge Island Fire Department’s Medic 21 to a hospital in Seattle for treatment.

Assistant Chief Luke Carpenter of the Bainbridge Island Fire Department said the accident occurred near Ada’s Will Lane, just south of the Agate Pass Bridge.

The southbound lane of the highway was blocked off for approximately 15 minutes while emergency responders assisted the man on the bike who was hurt, Carpenter added.

The vehicle involved was the No. 90 commuter bus between Poulsbo and Bainbridge that serves the Bainbridge ferry terminal.

John Clauson, executive director for Kitsap Transit, said the accident was under investigation by Bainbridge authorities and an internal review was underway, as well.

Clauson said the standard procedure in an accident is to immediately pull the bus from service.

“In these kinds of situations we put the vehicle, if you will, in a kind of quarantine,” he said.

Maintenance records for the bus will be pulled and reviewed.

Accounts of the incident will also be gathered from passengers who were on the bus.

After the accident, contact information was gathered from riders and a second bus was called in to complete the route.

Few details on the accident were available Tuesday.

“It’s pretty early in the investigation,” Clauson said.
