The draft of the city of Bainbridge Island’s update to its comprehensive plan — the policy document that will guide growth and development on the island for the next two decades — has now been finished and will take center stage in September before the city’s planning commission.

City officials said the draft comes after nearly two years of work by city planners, planning commission and community members.

The planning commission will host two open houses and public hearings on the updated plan this month.

The first meeting starts at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 17. It opens with a 90-minute open house, with the public hearing beginning at 11:30 a.m. The hearing will run until 1 p.m.

The second meeting is Thursday, Sept. 22, and will follow the same format. A 90-minute open house at 4:30 p.m. will be followed by a two-hour public hearing.

Both events will be held in council chambers at city hall.

City officials said the two open houses will give islanders a chance to learn about the proposed changes to the growth plan.

“I strongly encourage members of the community to attend one of the two September meetings,” said City Manager Doug Schulze.

“The revised comprehensive plan will be the guiding document for our community,” he added. “It’s important that everyone who lives or works on Bainbridge Island have the opportunity to have a voice in our community’s future.”

In addition to the public hearing, comments can also be submitted in writing to city hall, or via email to pcd@bainbridgewa.gov.

The comp plan update can be reviewed on the city website at www.ci.bainbridge-isl.wa.us.

The written comment period ends at 4 p.m. Monday, Sept. 26.

The city council will be briefed on the draft updated plan at its study session on Tuesday, Sept. 6.
