An 18-year-old Bainbridge Island man has been charged with attempting to elude a police vehicle after allegedly trying to outrun a police car on Fletcher Bay Road early Tuesday morning.

Emmanuel Narte Rombero Dancel was arrested for attempting to elude and driving under the influence and booked into Kitsap County Jail Tuesday.

Bainbridge police arrested Dancel after a chase that exceeded 80 miles per hour.

Dancel crashed his vehicle, described as a black, 1990s-style Honda, after he left the road near the intersection of Fletcher Bay Road and Lynwood Center and went over an embankment.

He was charged later Tuesday in Kitsap County Superior Court on the eluding charge, a felony that carries a maximum five-year prison sentence and a $10,000 fine.

Bail was set at $22,500.

According to court documents, Dancel was driving south on Fletcher Bay Road at approximately 3 a.m. Tuesday when an officer going the other way clocked him on radar at driving 46 mph in a 35 mph zone.

Dancel allegedly accelerated after the officer activated his lights and siren.

The officer said Dancel was driving at a speed of 80 mph, but could see Dancel’s tail lights continuing to pull away.

As the officer approached the intersection of Fletcher Bay Road and Lynwood Center, he said he saw “a huge cloud of dust and smoke, as well as a broken stop sign and car parts.”

“I located the car down the embankment, unoccupied,” Officer Ben Sias said in his statement of probable cause.

Sias found the driver down the embankment, about 75 feet from the car.

Dancel suffered a cut lip in the crash and was treated by an aid crew.

He allegedly told police he had consumed eight beers and knew he was driving drunk, and he estimated his speed at 80 to 100 mph during the chase.

Dancel was given a blood alcohol test at the police station, and the test results were .193 and .190.
