Richard Murphy’s ‘Man Cooking’ among dozens of films to appear at the Celluloid Bainbridge Film Festival this weekend. See a full lineup at the bottom of this story.

High-school senior Richard Murphy is so immersed in his next filmmaking project that he’s nearly forgotten his big debut.

“Oh, it’s this weekend?” he said.

Mark your calendar – or in Murphy’s case, mark your arm – so you don’t miss the offerings of roughly two dozen local filmmakers in the 11th annual Celluloid Bainbridge Film Festival. It runs all day Sunday at the Lynwood Theatre.

Inspired by late-night cooking shows helmed by rabidly macho chefs, Murphy and some buddies devised the 3-minute “Man Cooking,” which features a chainsaw-wielding, naked-from-the-waist-up cook who, as host of the titular show-within-a-show, pounds out and grills up the biggest burger ever.

In many ways, his homemade effort embodies the spirit of Celluloid, which has long offereed a forum for new filmmakers to debut their work.

This year, too, veteran filmmakers and producers will show off past work, like Renée and Harry Longstreet with “Forget Me Never,” and Marian Rees and Anne Hopkins with “Foxfire,” staring the late Jessica Tandy and Hume Cronyn.

First-time Celluloid coordinator Paula Elliot, of the Bainbridge Island Arts and Humanities Council, grouped the showings into loose categories to encourage people to stick around for multiple screenings rather than to pop in just for one.

That’s a tasty prospect for participants, especially younger ones like Murphy – who’s been so inspired this year that he plans to major in filmmaking and videography in college, and minor in film studies. “Man Cooking” is just the beginning.

“You can see as I play the stuff, they get higher and higher in quality as I’ve grown,” he said.
