Schlegel’s acrylic paintings explore the tension between the representational and the abstract world of art. He responds to structures, landscapes and animals in their surrounding environment with works on panel or canvas and often includes collaged materials in these images. Schlegel begins with a sketch in charcoal, graphite or oil pastel and then develops the image either in studio or en plein-air.

Schlegel also continues to explore three-dimensional forms. Using paper, wire, string, and fabric, he sculpts “gestures,” capturing the posture and movement of figures and birds.

The opening reception will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 4.

The exhibition runs through March 26.

Roby King Galleries is at 176 Winslow Way East.
