Justice documentary to screen at Suquamish Church

Free Range Films is hosting a free showing of the award-winning documentary “13th” at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 7 at the Suquamish Church of Christ (18732 Division Ave.) in Suquamish.

The film, named for the constitutional amendment that abolished slavery with the exception of punishment for crime, documents how the U.S. criminal justice system has been driven by racism from the days of slavery to today’s era of mass incarceration.

Today, according to the film, the U.S. makes up about 5 percent of the population — but Americans make up 25 percent of the people in the world who are incarcerated.

Director Ava DuVernay demonstrates that slavery has been perpetuated in practice since the end of the American Civil War, leading to the mass incarceration of people of color. The film features several prominent activists, academics and politicians such as Angela Davis, Van Jones and others.

“13th” has garnered acclaim from film critics and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary in 2017. DuVernay’s previous work included the 2014 hit film, “Selma,” which was nominated for Best Picture.

There will be a discussion following the film. All are welcome.
