Born out of an umbrella organization of Al-Qaeda in Iraq, the so-called Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) burst onto the international stage in 2013. Since then, the group has seized control of a number of critical strongholds in both Iraq and Syria, declared itself a caliphate known as the Islamic State, and has claimed responsibility for recent terrorist attacks in Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. Kelly Erickson, visiting assistant professor of international politics and government at the University of

Puget Sound, will serve as moderator of the free program.
