Best Bets April 7 – 9 | The Bainbridge Blab

Alright, alright, alright, the thing I like about weekends: I keep getting older, they stay the same length.

While your weekend may never be as long as you want it, regardless of how much time you have left on this planet, the fleeting nature of our work-week-respite acts as a powerful motivator to get out and live it to the fullest. So what do ya say? Get your booty out there and enjoy the weath- Oh…

Start your weekend off on the right foot by spending your Friday participating in something really degrading… Composting!

John Barutt will lead a free composting class at 1 p.m. Friday, April 7 at the Bainbridge Public Library.

Whether you’re new to composting or improving an established system, Barutt will put you on the path to soil success.

On Saturday from at 10 a.m. to noon take part in a celebration of our leafy, green, oxygen-producing counterparts during a ceremonial planting of the 9th (and final) tree in the new Redwood Grove at Sakai Park. The event is part Celebrate Trees! Earth Month Bainbridge Island, which is a series of events all highlighting our community appreciation of trees. This event is co-sponsored by the Bainbridge Island Parks Foundation and the park district.

Dr. Olaf Robiero, Internationally revered and locally beloved Island arborist and plant pathologist, who has done more on BI than anyone in preserving our local trees and tracking the history of trees on the island, will be honored at the event and will plant the final seedling. The event will be followed with a bit of service work clearing ivy while educating islanders on best practices to protect their own trees from invasive ivy.

Saturday evening, get over to the Ritchie Observatory at Battle Point Park to check out “When Galaxies Collide.”

Gravity draws galaxies together. What happens when they collide? Our nearest galactic neighbor is heading straight for us at 250,000 mph! Astronomer Steve Ruhl will look at what is going to happen at the planetarium show at 7:30 p.m.

The show is free to members of the Battle Point Astronomical Association; $2 donation suggested for nonmembers, $5 for families. There will also be a special kids show, “The Lives of Stars,” from 4 to 6 p.m. with Dr. Erica. If the sky is clear, astronomers will be on hand with telescopes.

On Sunday, get your chill on at the Dayaalu Center with “Dances of Peace” at 7 p.m. Come join in the circle, with simple movements set to live music. Songs and mantras from many spiritual and world traditions are taught each time; no experience is necessary. Donations will be accepted.

Then get yourself ready for the work week ahead because your weekend has gone the way of Pepsi Blue and that McDonald’s Mulan Szechuan sauce.
