Life is good for Sam Marshall. After a spell at Berklee College of Music, he’s returned to the Northwest to pursue his passion. He released two solo CDs, “The Absolution of Sunny Boy Sam” and “Long Hammer,” but of late he’s been conspiring with two other jazz-influenced artists, Bennett Kling on bass and Collin Andresen on percussion. Together, as the Sam Marshall Trio, they create “a progressive roots sound that is highly groove and improvisationally oriented.” They play at Pegasus Saturday on the heels of releasing their CD “Floorwalker.”

So why exactly is Sam Marshall singing the blues?

“The term blues is somewhat of a cover for us,” the 2003 Bainbridge High School grad said.

Each injects their “secret” influence: the drummer has a hip-hop sensibility, Kling brings a rock and jazz vibe, and Marshall adds a “metal-jazz fusion” influenced by his father’s old-school blues record collection.

In other words, it’s a good time with funky beat.
