To the editor:

Thanks to Bainbridge Rotarians and many community volunteers, the marvelous new public space called the Waypoint welcomes island visitors. As volunteer coordinator for the tireless team that keeps the Waypoint plantings looking good, I am deeply appreciative of the helping hands that contribute, whether by participating in our monthly gardening sessions or with special gifts.

Over the past year, the skillful horticulture crew from the Bloedel Reserve has helped prep, plant and tend more than 3,500 plants many times, often in dreadful weather, as have the Friday Tidy volunteers who keep Bainbridge Island’s library grounds lovely.

This summer, special help came from the members of the island’s Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, who generously spent a sunny Saturday morning weeding and removing ivy from the Waypoint.

This month, Dick and Kay Krutch donated a thousand plump daffodil bulbs which we planted in honor of Mary Sam, a granddaughter of Chief Seattle who lived and worked on Bainbridge Island.

Bainbridge Island can be very proud of all these helping hands!
