Water polo team’s values are grounded | Letters | Nov. 18

Tuesday evening, I attended the water polo banquet, which sounds fancy for a get-together and potluck dinner in the high school gym and potluck dinner. But it was in so many ways better than any event I have ever attended on Bainbridge.

Tuesday evening, I attended the water polo banquet, which sounds fancy for a get-together and potluck dinner in the high school gym and potluck dinner. But it was in so many ways better than any event I have ever attended on Bainbridge.

It was exactly what high school sports are meant to do – create team members who respect one another and are grateful for the support of their coaches and parents.

After various presentations, the seniors got up to speak and in just a few sentences, they fulfilled every wish that parents harbor for their high school athlete.

The captains talked about how much the team meant to them, how the experience was unforgettable and that high school will be remembered fondly mostly due to their participation in the water polo team.

Their sincere and authentic respect for one another was a testament to what high school sports can be: a team learning to work together and grow in admiration for one another, not a pressure cooker competition to garner those college scholarships.

This was achieved in no small measure by the attitude, perseverance and commitment of coaches Kristin Swanson and Drew Keller.

It really is refreshing to witness a group of young athletes like this who are dedicated to the team and supportive of one another.

Thanks to the team, the parents and the coaches for fostering an atmosphere of mutual respect which will serve these athletes well in sports and most of all, throughout their lives.
