That’s $20,000 that will go up in smoke | LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Many islanders loathe fireworks — not just terrified pets and wildlife, but humans too. The noise, litter and wasteful spending are good examples of what’s bad. Yet the Bainbridge Island Yacht Club wants people to donate $20,000 to support this.

Why we need to celebrate our independence from Britain with reminders of the horrors of war — explosions, bombs, and danger, is unfathomable. Not only that, but because we live near vendors of fireworks, we are relentlessly assaulted from June through the end of July. Already many of us can hear them booming and echoing.

If the Bainbridge Island Yacht Club wants to be a community asset, they could continue the shoreline trail, rather than blocking it. Fireworks are just money up in smoke. And $20,000 would be better spent to support One Call for All.
