I’m writing on the weekend. At our home near the ferry terminal it is easy to see dozens of Island visitors gaze down the Waterfront Trail through the wire-mesh barrier and turn around up the hill to find another route into Winslow. During the week, cycling commuters now use the sidewalk or busy street to go down to the ferry.

It has been three months since the city found the bridge by Waterfront Park “unsafe” and precipitously closed it. I assume that bearing small weights were less the problem than the city’s new awareness of rot in one pier, and, therefore liability for injury.

Whatever. I hope the city of Bainbridge Island will prioritize repairs there. Many commuters, visitors, and folks in our community (with many frail or handicapped people) who see the trail as the lovely, safe way into town.
