Landowners should pay for ‘living room’ redo | Letters | March 6

If Winslow Way indeed is the “living room of the Island” then I suggest that every island landowner pay to redecorate and repair the living room.

I wonder if all of you who live outside of the Winslow Utility District would have been so wildly in favor of the expenditures being so blithely approved if you had to pay for them.

As it stands now, myself and my neighbors will EACH be required to pay $2,272.73 (plus the financial service fees on $5 million) so that you will have the “living room” of your dreams.

In addition, I understand that we will also be paying for a new sewer treatment facility which will handle your waste when you are visiting the “living room,” whether for meetings, appointments, shopping or community events.

It is interesting that we have not been given an opportunity to vote on this taxation, and that there is no utilities board overseeing our fee increases.

It was truly frustrating to hear people who live outside of Winslow speak so fervently in favor of burdening fewer than 20 percent of their fellow islanders with taxation that will pay for the convenience of all,.

It was also frustrating to hear city employee Chris Wierzbicki boast that his pet project will be done without using any money from the island’s “general tax fund,” which is apparently not the same as a “utility tax” in his view.
