To the editor:
The time has come to make a decision as a community whether or not to pass the upcoming Bainbridge School District bond. While I’m sure many have already made up their mind I’d like to offer up one more unique perspective, that of a student.
Growing up as the daughter of two employees in the district I’ve seen my fair share of classrooms, offices and studios. However, I’m not sure that the work spaces we call our own in the 100 Building can be described as anything less than dilapidated.
Our arts program at Bainbridge High School is one to be proud of and should bring a great sense of pride to the district. Unfortunately, the 100 Building doesn’t come close to reflecting the creativity and excitement brought to the classroom every day by students and teachers alike. We bring our Spartan pride in full force to sporting events and club competitions but why stop at that. The 100 Building should be a place that students seek out rather than avoid. The dank hallways and grungy bathrooms certainly don’t make it a desirable place to spend time in.
The problem isn’t with the staff or student body but single handedly the building. Delaney Wiggins, a current student said, “I really enjoy ceramics and look forward to going to class but it would be nice to have the building and classrooms convey the same bright and happy energy the class does.” This building has seen countless generations of students but the world of education is ever changing and it’s time that we catch up.
Vote yes, for the bond and you wouldn’t merely be enhancing a building, but the richness of our Island in every aspect.
