Bicyclists: Please bathe in reflective clothing | LETTER TO THE EDITOR

To the editor:

I read the sad news this past week about the bicycle commuter being hit by a bus on 305 and I thought it’s a good time to remind our bicycling commuting friends what you look like, in the dark, from behind, in the wee hours of the morning.

Most of you have red lights on the back of your bike, and that’s a great start.

Some blinking (better), some not, some bright (better), some not so much.

But the ones we really see are the ones who bathe themselves in reflective tape, or clothing.

There’s one person whose entire jacket is made out of reflective material and I can see him (her?) from a mile away. And keep in mind, if your jacket has reflective tape on it, but your backpack covers it up, it’s no help to you or me on you being seen.

Put the reflectors on your backpack — hello? When it’s dark and rainy out there, and you’re grinding it out at oh-dark-and-rainy-thirty on your way to the ferry, please help yourselves to be safe by being as visible as possible. Might save your life.
