A wonderful legacy for our community | Letters | Sept. 17

Recently the Bainbridge Public Library received a wonderful surprise – a legacy bequest from the estate of Ed Doremus, a long-time island resident and lover of books and reading.

Following World War II, Ed moved to the Northwest and in 1955 sailed into Port Madison and fell in love with Bainbridge Island. He and his wife moved here and contributed to the island community of readers and lovers of books.

Ed wrote several books about Bainbridge and in 1960 started the Port Madison Press. Over the years, he did printing work for many island businesses.

Ed also became involved in our Bainbridge Public Library, joining the board and serving as its president in the mid-1970s while his wife assisted with the organization of Helpline House.

This was a couple that truly contributed to the community that is Bainbridge Island!

As a final gesture of support to our library, Ed chose to leave a legacy donation to BPL. Ed understood that the library facility itself is owned by the community and is supported and operated only by donation.

It is caring islanders like Ed who keep our island treasure – the Bainbridge Public Library – a thriving centerpiece for the community.
