Spartan athletics are in full swing at Bainbridge High School as eight teams kick off the fall season. While five veteran head coaches return, three first-year coaches have stepped into new roles as leaders of the golf and water polo programs. With just a week of practice under their belts, BHS’ head coaches share their insight on the upcoming season.
Coach: Anne Howard-Lindquist, fourth year
2009 result: 12th at 3A state meet (girls)
Seniors graduated: Emily Barreca, Annie Taylor; Willie Wenzlau
Varsity returners: Isabel Ferguson, Taylor Hebert, Courtney Parker, Anna Misenti, Courtney Odell; John Murphy, Sean LaBelle, Tomas Delgado, Brenden Willerford and Kiwi Sheldon
Captains: Lauren Abrams, Courtney Odell, Sarah Redmond, Isabel Ferguson; John Murphy, Sean LaBelle and Devereaux Kesler
Contest to look forward to: “Sunfair, because that’s in one month from now, and the team will look a lot different. It’s a good marker midway through the season. It’s a meet to prep us for district and state.”
What needs to happen for the Spartans to be successful in their first contest against Seattle Prep, Nathan Hale, Chief Sealth and Ingraham Sept. 15: “First of all, we have to have everybody come back from their summer vacations, or their training. We have quite a few people hiking or still vacationing.
“We have probably 70 people who have shown up for practice so far but we know the whole team has to get together. Our varsity runners have been training all summer putting in space training. We’ll be sharpening our team skills; we’ll take that natural running talent that everyone’s working on and focus on the competitive aspect of running.”
