Making the pitch: Wayne Roth voter’s guide statement

Candidates for the Bainbridge Island City Council have submitted candidate statements for Kitsap County’s voters’s pamplet.

Wayne Roth is seeking the Central Ward, Position 5 seat on the Bainbridge Island City Council. His opponent is Arlene Buetow.

Here is his statement as it will appear in the county voter’s guide.

Wayne Roth

Biography: Professional Experience: I am the General Manager of KUOW Public Radio, a position I have held since 1983. I have worked in public media for more than 40 years, including nine years on the NPR (National Public Radio) Board of Directors, serving two years as Chair.

Education: I have an MA degree in communications and a BA degree in English.

Community Service: I serve on the board of the Bainbridge Island Japanese American Exclusion Memorial Association. I helped establish the Marge Williams Office Center in 1999 and am a former board member of the Bainbridge Island Arts & Humanities Council.

Statement: My working life has been devoted to public service. I have a strong interest in and enthusiasm for the civic affairs of Bainbridge Island. I will bring years of relevant experience and a fresh perspective to City government.

My approach to the office of Bainbridge Island Council Member will be guided by values of integrity, access, engagement, and collaboration.

I am a good communicator and will participate in Council business with an open mind.

I support our Council/Manager form of government and will work to strengthen its service to the residents of Bainbridge Island. I know from experience that comprehensive strategic planning and responsible fiscal management go hand in hand.

I believe that Council decisions must be made with a long view, beyond my term as an elected representative.

My family and I have been members of the Bainbridge Island community for 17 years.

Our son Ben graduated from BHS in 2007. I love where I live.
