Fireworks are wasteful and stupid | Letter to the editor

To the editor:

If ever there was something that makes no sense anymore and should be banned everywhere, it’s fireworks.

We have homeless issues in major cities. We have poor children that don’t eat during the summer when school is out, and countless other serious matters that need support requiring money.

Yet local organizations blow up tens of thousands of dollars on the Fourth of July and New Year’s Eve.

And then there are the individuals who pay hundreds and even thousands of dollars and risk personal injury, fires that have the potential to do millions of dollars worth of damage during one of the most tinder dry times of the year, and then there’s the sheer stupidity of blowing up money you’ve worked hard to earn.

All of this while traumatizing pets and wildlife. Whoopee. Big fun.

Finally, I would ask the tribes and anyone else who continues to set off fireworks for days after the Fourth to stop.

It’s bad enough for one day and when it’s 80-plus degrees out for days in a row it’s just plain irresponsible. Stupid also comes to mind.
