“Every member of the Bainbridge High School freshman football team went home with bellies full of pizza Tuesday night.Poor training program? Quite the opposite – the feed was a reward for a defensive touchdown scored in the midst of capping an undefeated 7-0 season with a 45-12 romp over Port Angeles Junior High School that afternoon.I’m told it’s the first time in 30 years a Bainbridge High School football team has gone undefeated, Bainbridge co-coach Sean Eaton said.Eaton, along with Sean Yarr, have guided the once-moribund eighth- and ninth-grade program to a 19-2 mark in the past three seasons.The Spartans closed this campaign slowly, with an exchange of turnovers before Mike Ersser took a pass interception 69 yards to the Port Angeles one-foot-line. Andrew Shelton then took the ball in for the score, and Matt Wauters’ two-point conversion gave Bainbridge an 8-0 lead.Port Angeles scored on its next drive, but Bainbridge’s Nick Breslin blocked the extra-point attempt – he also later blocked a punt – and from that point on, the Spartans were off to the races.Other touchdowns came on two passes from quarterback Joey Picha – one to Zack Townsend for 40 yards and a second to Ersser to 15. Zack Ainsley rambled 69 yards for a score on a counter play, and Ersser’s second interception of the day resulted in a 20-yard return for a score.Wauters helped cap the scoring with a 32-yard field goal – a wobbly boot in swet weather that landed on top of the Port Angeles goal post and just managed to trickle over.Eaton and Yarr said they weren’t concerned that Bainbridge’s dominance might end with a pending possible move of the high school’s sports programs to the Metro League.They are concerned, however, about the possibility that the handful of eighth-graders who have played on the squad over the years may not have a place to play in future years if they don’t meet the Pee Wee youth football weight limit of 135 pounds for its A-level team.Competitiveness, however, will not be an issue as far as the coaches are concerned.We took on Seattle Prep this year and beat them, Yarr said. I’m going to miss our old rivalries with the junior highs around here, but I’m looking forward to starting some new ones.Soccer club sets annual meetingThe Bainbridge Island Youth Soccer Club will host its annual meeting next Thursday, Nov. 16 at 7:30 in the Phelps Road Fire Station meeting room.BIYSC members in good standing – usually meaning parents of kids who played in the fall recreation program – are invited to the meeting.
