Gridders eager to set the tone for league play

The Bainbridge football team took care of business against its guests from the north Friday, defeating the Salisbury Sabres 41-18.

Salisbury, a high school on the outskirts of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, had no answer for running back Alex Crane, who scored rushing touchdowns of 69 and 66 yards and also scored on a 90 yard kickoff return. He ran for 157 yards on just four carries.

Quarterback Carson Zajonic also had a big night. He threw for 182 yards and a touchdown to Chris Bell. Zajonic also had two long completions to Henry Indivik and Corey Touchette that set up short touchdown runs from Touchette and Nick Miller.

Now 3-0 on the season, the Spartans open up league play against the Bishop Blanchet Braves Friday night.

The Braves are 1-2, having lost 38-0 to Moutlake Terrace last week.

It’s a game that has formed into a solid rivalry over the years, with both teams playing close and intense games. Those games have been late in the season when a playoff berth is on the line.

Bainbridge will be looking for revenge having lost to Blanchet 7-0 in 2008 and 17-14 in 2009.

“It’s Homecoming, [but] it’s the opening of Metro, [so we have to] set the tone for Metro that we’re a legit team that wants to challenge for the Metro championship,” Grimm said.
