BHS fall sports preview | Girls swim and dive

Spartan athletics are in full swing at Bainbridge High School as eight teams kick off the fall season. While five veteran head coaches return, three first-year coaches have stepped into new roles as leaders of the golf and water polo programs. With just a week of practice under their belts, BHS’ head coaches share their insight on the upcoming season.

Coach: Greg Colby, 18th year

2009 record: 5-5 in dual meets

Post-season result: Seventh in 3A state meet; Sarah Grundman fourth in the 500-yard freestyle

Seniors graduated: Kinsey Lowe, Olivia MacDonald, Alex Miggins and Eliza Silverman

Varsity returners: 12

Captains: Isabel Brofsky, Claire Knox and Emily Sonnenfeld

Deepest event: “We have eight incoming freshmen and a couple of transfers on the team, and we’re going to be be fairly solid in all events. I’d say our free relays and the freestyle events, 100, 200, 500-free might be our deepest events. We have a very good freshman diver coming in who should score at state, and three, maybe four, freshman swimmers that should also score. Our sophomores have scored at state and Tess Harpur has scored. We should be a little bit better of a team and last year.”

Contest to look forward to: “We’re going to have a dual meet with Mercer Island in October and that’s a key meet for us. It’s a little bit later in the season than we swam them before. It’ll give us a really good idea of how districts and state might go. We’re swimming Gig Harbor in early October – they’re always a very strong 4A team – and Newport is always a solid team from the KingCo Conference, as well.”

What needs to happen for the Spartans to be successful in their first contest against Camas Sept. 10: “We have some really solid freshmen coming in that can contribute to the team, so just transitioning those guys into high school swimming or the swimming format successfully is definitely a goal.”
