Two members of the Bainbridge boys’ lacrosse team are continuing their playing careers in college.
Cameron Parker, a senior attacker, recently signed with Fairfield University, a Div. I school in Fairfield, Conn. Parker is one of 11 players to sign a national letter of intent.
Parker said he was looking at the University of Denver, Dartmouth and Brown before signing with the Stags.
“It’s a good school size,” he said. “The classes are small, which is what I really like. I also liked the feel of the campus. The team seems really close together and I really like the coach.”
Fairfield, who play in the ECAC Lacrosse League, have made it to the NCAA tournament twice and were ranked in the top 20 in the nation for three years straight. They’ve also won several tournament and league championships.
Under current coach Andrew Copelan, the Stags have had back to back winning seasons for the first time in a decade. This year the Stags will also play in the first-ever ECAC post-season tournament with a automatic bid to the NCAA tournament on the line.
Parker, who is ranked in the top five for high school players on the West Coast by West Side LAX, also joins former teammate Sam Snow at Fairfield. Snow made the All-ECAC team as a freshman.
The senior, a two-time captain for Bainbridge, is also a member of Team Washington, an all-star team made up of the top players in the state. He scored 18 goals and registered nine assists and 12 ground balls in 10 games for the Spartans as they made it to the state semifinals.
Parker said he plans to attend business school at Fairfield.
Also signing with a Division I school is his teammate Quinn McMahon, a defender who signed with Providence College in Providence, R.I.
McMahon, who was looking at Loyola Marymount, Lafayette College, Denver and the Air Force Academy, said the Providence coaches noticed him at a camp on the East Coast over the summer. He eventually went on his official visit and liked what he saw.
“The coaching staff is just amazing,” he said.
The Friars, who play in the Big East Conference, made the NCAA tournament in 2004, 2006 and 2007 but haven’t had a winning season since 2006. They didn’t win a game at all last year.
McMahon said he plans to major in either mathematics or international studies after taking a trip to Russia.
Both say they will have to compete with many other players at their respective teams for time next year, but both are excited to get to play Division I lacrosse.
The duo are also excited for their senior season, as they and numerous other returners work to get back to the state title game.
“We’ve got a couple new kids we’re working on for (defense), but we’ve lost only two seniors, so we should do pretty well,” McMahon said.
