The Bainbridge Island Classic Car Cruise-In is officially back for the warm weather season, with its first gathering of the year May 26 at First Baptist Church on the corner of Highway 305 and Madison Avenue.
Over 100 cars line the lawn at Bainbridge First Baptist Church each show, varying from vintage 1950s-60s Chevrolet pickups and Volkswagen buses to Teslas and Porsches from the 2010s. Owners often set up lawn chairs next to their prized vintage rides, and visitors are able to ask questions and even take a seat behind the wheel. The classic DeLorean DMC-12 can also be seen at each show. The model commonly known as the time machine in Back to the Future was only produced for a short time in the early 1980s and is a staple of the Classic Car Cruise-In.
Bainbridge Island local and car enthusiast Jim Peek first began the car show in 2003 to fundraise for Project Backpack, which provides essential school supplies, clothes and school fees for Bainbridge Island students in need. About 10 years later, the reins were handed over to brothers Micah and Aaron Strom, who have hosted the show since with Modern Collision Rebuild and Service.
The Strom brothers’ father, Dick Strom, began Modern Collision Rebuild and Service in 1974. When Strom retired, his sons took over the family business and officially purchased the local auto repair shop in January 2010.
The show will continue June 30, July 28 and Aug. 25.
