Impressionism art
Impressionism art will be featured at the Roby King Gallery on Winslow Way March 4-27.
Works from five Northwest artists will be shown: Cheri Christensen, Pam Ingalls, William F. Reese, Pamela Wachtler and Robin Weiss.
Opening reception is 6-8 p.m. Hours are noon to 5 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays, closing an hour earlier on Sundays.
Lots of grand marshals
The Bainbridge Island Chamber of Commerce has announced its grand marshals for the return of the July 4 parade.
There are hundreds of them.
Those to be honored at the start of the Grand Old 4th of July Parade will be leaders of Bainbridge Prepares, the city, the fire department and Community Pharmacy along with other local organizations and volunteers.
Why so many? They have been involved in vaccinating the island residents in the fight against COVID-19 the past two years. It’s because of their work the city can go back to having its parade in-person.
Police rescue
Two Seattle men were rescued by Bainbridge Island police Feb. 22 after their kayak capsized on Puget Sound.
South Kitsap Fire and Rescue units were dispatched around 10 a.m. to a 911 call reporting one kayak had capsized. South Kitsap emergency responders spotted the kayakers about halfway between Harper Pier in Port Orchard and Blake Island.
BIPD officer Jon Bingham heard the call then responded aboard Marine 8 with officer Brent Miller. The officers pulled them from the 46-degree water. They transported the men, 41 and 54, to the Harper Pier. The men declined additional aid and were given a ride to their vehicle.
Another break-in
A vehicle in the Grand Forest west parking lot on Miller Road was broken into in the middle of the day Feb. 17.
A backpack containing an iPhone was taken. Since December, there have been six similar incidents reported at that parking lot.
Thieves are smashing windows to get inside the cars. They’re stealing anything they can find of value: credit cards, backpacks, wallets, a camera and electronics.
Double feature
Bainbridge Island Museum of Art presents a double feature March 8 at 2 and 7 p.m. at its Frank Buxton Auditorium.
The movies are “The Cats of Mirikitani” and “Enemy Alien.” The films draw attention to the parallel experiences between the incarceration of Japanese Americans in World War II and the post 9/11 Islamophobia.
Electric ferry
Kitsap Transit has been awarded a $7.7 million federal grant to design and construct an all-electric foot ferry and charging system at the Bremerton terminal.
The grant will cover 80 percent of the cost. Kitsap Transit will provide the rest.
In 2019, Kitsap Transit took delivery of the M/V Waterman, the first hybrid-diesel ferry to operate commercial service on Puget Sound. The Waterman uses a generator to charge a battery bank and operates on battery power while idling and loading passengers, reducing carbon-dioxide emissions and increasing the efficiency of its diesel engine.
