Bainbridge blotter | Not-so-smooth sailing

SUNDAY, APRIL 8

7:40 p.m. The Bainbridge Island Police Department assisted in a water rescue when they received report of a 25-foot sailboat in the middle of Rich Passage, apparently without power and its sails “jammed in their tracks.”

The caller said the small boat was in Rich Passage, just southwest of Lynwood Center, and that the person onboard had been struggling to climb the mast and had almost fallen overboard several times in the past three hours.

BIPD’s Marine 8 boat came to assist.

Onboard was one man, 54, of Port Orchard. The boat was taken into tow and secured to a private buoy north of Pleasant Beach. The man was given a ride to the Port Orchard public dock, where his father picked him up.

The man said he’d been without power, sail or steering ability for about three hours before the police arrived, stranded in heavy winds. He agreed to contact the police the next day to arrange retrieving his boat.
