Speedy sprinters sail through last Kiwanis All-Comers Meet
Published 12:33 pm Thursday, August 25, 2016
The final feet to cross the finish line in the culminating relay event at Monday’s Kiwanis All-Comers Track Meet brought more than an end to the race.
They brought also the end of the summer’s final community track meet, an end to the beloved seasonal ritual — and one more sign for all the speedy youngsters there that the start of school is most definitely on the horizon.
Far from being a bittersweet occasion, however, those gathered at the Bainbridge High School track earlier this week for the final meet brought this year’s season to a close in style, and the swiftly sinking sun saw flying feet and sweaty smiles all around.
There were even a few trophies.
Awards for the season’s champions and runners-up were awarded for the first time in the history of the event.
The overall champions: Ema Delecki, 6, and Charley King, 5, who accumulated the most points by combining their exceptional speed with frequent participation.
The girls’ runner-up trophies went to Liviana Eatinger, 3, and Catrina Godfrey, 6, who won 11 of 12 races in three meets.
The boys’ runners up were Chris Bourgeois, 4, and Howard Howlett, 8, who won 14 events across three meets and added 6 more wins in the final competition.
Honorable mention status went to Payton McPhail, 10, Liam Boyce, 5, Caleb Nelson, 10, and the Dennon sisters: Darya, 7, and Karina, 9.
And there were also more standouts on the track Monday.
“Darya Dennon was the star of Monday’s culminating meet,” said event organizer Paul Benton. “[She won] five events, including a 1:29 400-meter dash — an amazing time for a 7-year-old — and then pushing a girls 4×100 team to within .2 seconds of beating the boys team anchored by Howard Howlett.
“Meanwhile,” he added, “8-year-old speedster Howard won all six events he entered, including the relay, often just edging out his chief competitor Henry Rose, with both boys posting faster times than all the older boys, except 13-year-old Everett Moore.”
The season’s final 4×100 relay was a thriller as well, Benton said.
“Four teams of BHS cross country runners raced around the track in almost total darkness,” he said.
“The winning quartet seemed unusually fast, and the others seemed to finish very close to each other, but unfortunately they were apparently invisible to the remaining teammates who were supposed to be timing them.”
Still, perhaps it’s better that way. A little mystery leaves room for playful bragging — and the promise of a rematch next summer.
