Bainbridge boys notch another tie

The Spartans were unable to best the Braves Friday, and, after a full match of much back-and-forth, the visitors from Bishop Blanchet set off for home, leaving the field as empty as the scoreboard.
It was the varsity boys soccer team’s third tie of the season, though it was the only one of the three in which they were unable to score even a single goal.
Bainbridge High Head Coach Ian McCallum said that the team’s starting roster on Friday was very nearly a completely different team than the one that last took the field at home against Kingston on April 9, due in large part to injuries.
“Their coach joked and he couldn’t believe we didn’t score,” McCallum laughed. “We’re just having a hard time scoring goals.”
Friday’s Swiss cheese-esque lineup saw the promotion of at least four JV players to fill the holes, the coach added.
“When we played Kingston (on April 9) we only had four varsity players playing the game,” McCallum said.
“Spring break and injuries — one injury after another — one guy’s out for the season, another two might be out for the season, probably, depending on how far we go, and unfortunately it’s all been guys on that front line,” he said.
The younger players have been doing admirably as they’ve been forced to step up.
“The guys who have been coming in have done a nice job,” McCallum said. “But on Wednesday we had a central defender and a left back play forward.”
The Spartans will travel to play Ingraham Friday, April 22, and return home to host Rainier Beach at 7 p.m. Monday, April 25.
With only five games left on the regular season calendar, McCallum said that the team would do their best with the lineup they had and continue to work hard.
“The important part about tonight, for me, was the quality of our play,” he said. “We controlled the game, we had a lot of good chances.
“Hopefully we take this and then that goes into next week,” he added.
The tie at home left the island team with an overall season record of 3-4-3 (an even 3-all in league play), and the fifth spot in the Metro Sound standings.
