Bainbridge Island artist Irene Yesley will be participating in the statewide Women Painters of Washington show “Painting Poetry,” on display through December at the Columbia Center Building in downtown Seattle.

More than 35 members of Women Painters of Washington will show their work inspired by poems, sonnets, limericks and lyrics from a multitude of genres and authors, including some original poetry written by the artists themselves.

Yesley was inspired by William Henry Davies’ poem “Leisure,” about the simple pleasure of making time to look at the seemingly mundane world around us giving us the space for leisure.

“This is a simple little poem that I loved in grade school,” Yesley said. “And I still find it has a meaningful message.”

Her painting harks on the poem’s line “No time to see, when woods we pass, / Where squirrels hide their nuts in grass.”

There will be an artists’ reception from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 1, directly before the Pioneer Square First Thursday Art Walk.
