Trio of young adult novelists will visit Eagle Harbor Book Co.

Eagle Harbor Book Company is catering to a slightly younger crowd next month with a special young adult guest author lineup at the August First Friday Art Walk at 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 7.

Authors Sharon Huss Roat, Hilary T. Smith and Stephanie Oakes will share stories about writing for a young adult audience and why even “grownups” should read their books.

“Between the Notes,” by Roat, is a story about a teen finding her way home after a big change in circumstances.

When Ivy Emerson’s family loses their house — complete with her beloved piano — the fear of what’s to come seizes her like a bad case of stage fright. Ivy is then forced to move with her family from their affluent neighborhood to “the wrong side of the tracks.”

Hiding the truth from her friends — and the cute new guy in school, who may have secrets of his own — seems like a good idea at first. But, when the bad-boy-next door threatens to ruin everything, Ivy’s carefully crafted lies begin to unravel and there is seemingly no way to stop them.

Oakes will highlight her new novel “The Sacred Lies of Minnow Bly.”

The Kevinian cult has taken everything from 17-year-old Minnow: 12 years of her life, her family and her ability to trust.

And when she rebelled, they took away her hands, too.

Now the Prophet has been murdered, and the camp set aflame, and it’s clear that Minnow knows something — but she’s not talking.

As she languishes in juvenile detention, she struggles to unlearn everything she has been taught to believe, adjusting to a life behind bars and recounting the events that led up to her incarceration. But when an FBI detective approaches her about making a deal, Minnow sees she can have the freedom she always dreamed of — if she’s willing to part with the terrible secrets of her past.

Once things get to the breaking point, Ivy turns to her music, some surprising new friends and the trusting heart of her disabled little brother, and she will be surprised that not everyone is who she thought they were, including herself.

Smith will talk about her new novel “A Sense of the Infinite.”

It’s senior year of high school and Annabeth is ready for everything she and her best friend, Noe, have been planning and dreaming about.

But there are some things Annabeth isn’t prepared for, like the constant presence of Noe’s new boyfriend. Like how her relationship with her mom is wearing and fraying, and like the way the secret she’s been keeping hidden deep inside her for years has started clawing at her insides, making it hard to eat or even breathe.

As a chain of events pulls Annabeth further and further away from Noe, she finds herself closer and closer to discovering who she’s really meant to be — with her best friend or without.

The event is free and open to the public, though seating is limited.

The bookstore is at 157 Winslow Way East.
