Author recounts French journey

E.C. Murray, author of “A Long Way from Paris,” will speak at Eagle Harbor Books at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 21.

Murray’s searing non-fiction story of a city girl herding goats in the mountains of southern France in 1980 has received critical acclaim.

“A rich, lucid debut … readers will weep … they’ll also laugh,” reported Kirkus Reviews. Scott Driscoll of the University of Washington called it “riveting.”

With photos and maps, Murray will describe her own true spiritual journey living without running water or heat and barely any knowledge of French. She evolves from being first an unsure preppie, then a hippie and finally a strong and reliable leader who rises above unexpected tragedy.

E.C. Murray, a former Bainbridge Island resident, teaches at Tacoma Community College and Seattle Central Community College.

Eagle Harbor Books is at 157 Winslow Way East.
