Bike for Pie has become an annual island staple | Letters | Aug. 26

For the ninth consecutive year, Bike for Pie has celebrated summer, cycling pie-baking and pie-eating.
Conceived by Squeaky Wheels as an incentive for young and old alike to choose cycling as their dominant form of transportation, at least for a day, the volunteers at Squeaky Wheels have served up slices of pie to happy riders.
There are many people to thank for this outpouring of summer sweetness, beginning with Jeff and Heidi at Blackbird Bakery, which provides fabulous fresh pies.
Also integral to the event’s success is the generosity of Elliot and Tasha at Pane d’Amore in Lynwood Center, who for the past two years have generously donated use of their kitchen and pie ingredients for our volunteer bakers — led by Squeaky Wheels board member Kent Scott.
Cyclists who rode the 32-mile route were further rewarded with quiche and pies baked by Christy Carr and other members of Friends of the Farms, which is a recipient of funds raised by the event.
Thanks also to other sponsors – Bainbridge Island Physical Therapy, Da Vinci Physical Therapy, The Traveller bookstore, Grow Community, Harbour Public House, Treehouse Café, Bainbridge Cycle Shop – for their contributions to make Bike for Pie the Northwest’s most unique cycling event.
Dana Berg, for board members and volunteers of Squeaky Wheels
