Chris Bell scored a season-high 33 points and grabbed 14 rebounds as the Bainbridge Spartans used a 17-0 run in the first quarter to defeat the Bishop Blanchet Braves 65-54 Tuesday night at Paski Gymnasium.
It’s their first win of the season.
Bell was also 17 of 20 from the free throw line.
He scored the first 12 points for Bainbridge in the game. The Spartans held the Braves to zero points in the first quarter thanks to some good defense, some poor shooting and some bad luck as several layups failed to go in.
Blanchet finally scored with 7:36 left in the second quarter, but Bainbridge increased its lead to over 20 points.
But the Braves got it together to cut the Spartans’ lead to just nine late in the third before Eric Raustein hit a three pointer with a couple of seconds left.
Blanchet kept at it and got the lead down to just four, but that was as close as they got. Michael Crowley scored while Austin Kimerer turned it over on a travel. Raustein also had a big steal while Bell scored seven of his last eight points at the charity stripe to close it out.
Bainbridge hosts Franklin at 8 p.m. Friday. The girls’ basketball team plays Bishop Blanchet at 7 p.m tomorrow. They host the Quakers at 6:15 p.m. Friday.
