POLICE BLOTTER

Bainbridge Police reported the following incidents. See an interactive map of incidents below.

MAY 15

4:23 p.m. A Bainbridge woman reported being defrauded by a sweepstakes scam in March. She told police that on March 13 she had received a call from someone at the “Federal Trade Commission” who said she had won $350,000 in a sweepstakes but needed to pay insurance fees before she could be awarded the money. She was given a verification number, which she called. She was then instructed to send the payment to an address in San Jose, Costa Rica, via Western Union, which she did. For the next 10 days she was called by several different people who requested more money to cover the fees associated with her jackpot. One person she talked to said he worked with “Lloyds of London,” another with the “IRS.” She sent a total of nine payments to people in San Jose, and one person in Chicago. The dollar amount of her payments was not disclosed. A report was forwarded to the U.S. Secret Service.

MAY 17

2:59 a.m. A car with one working headlight was stopped by an officer on SR-305 near Seabold Church Road. As the driver rolled his window down the officer noticed a strong smell of alcohol emanating from the car. The driver, a Silverdale man, said the smell was coming from his passenger, as he was the designated driver. The driver agreed to a portable breath test, which registered a 0.133 blood alcohol content. Following field sobriety tests, the man was arrested for driving under the influence. He was taken to the police department where he gave a repeat performance on a breath test, again registering 0.133. An officer transported him to Kitsap County Jail.

12:19 p.m. A Kingston driver was apparently dozing behind the wheel when her Volkswagen Passat drove off SR-305 near Agatewood Road. The car struck a tree, rolled over once and came to rest on its wheels. The driver was not injured. The driver said she had just gotten off her shift for Washington State Ferries and had not gotten enough sleep. She was cited for inattention to driving.

MAY 18

8:25 a.m. A Bainbridge driver was motoring northbound on Eagle Harbor Drive when a deer sprang out in front of her Ford pickup. The driver had time to brake slightly but the deer’s head collided with the grill of the truck. The deer died at the scene.

1:15 p.m. A vandal apparently used a BB gun to puncture sliding glass window in a house on North Madison Avenue. Repair was estimated at $100. No suspects.

3:51 p.m. A Bainbridge High School student reported that her cell phone was stolen from her purse while she was waiting for a bus. Using a different phone, the girl sent a text message to her missing phone and received a reply from an unknown person asking whose phone it was. She replied with her name and the unknown texter replied that she was “a bitch” and that she would never see her phone again. The phone was a lime-green-and-purple Verizon model valued at $150. No suspects.

MAY 19

6:27 p.m. A bicycle was reported stolen from a Commodore Lane residence. The 20-inch Mongoose bicycle had been left propped against the side of a shed. It was valued at $80. No suspects.

MAY 20

8:47 p.m. A Tacoma mariner missed a navigation buoy off Wing Point and found a shoal. The boat rolled onto its side and became stuck. The police boat responded and stood by until the incoming tide freed the vessel at 9:30 p.m. It was escorted to the public dock in Eagle Harbor. No injuries were reported.

9:55 p.m. A window was broken out of a Buick Lesabre parked at a Fletcher Bay Road business and several items were stolen from inside. Missing items included a cell phone and jacket. No suspects.

MAY 21

8:52 a.m. A woman spooked an apparent car prowler on Shannon Drive. The woman said she was walking to her car, parked near the senior center, when she saw the man “pop up” among the parked cars. The man got into a red “oxidized” truck and the woman noticed a travel briefcase lying in the parking lot where he had been. She asked the man if the case was his. He replied “no” and drove away. She described the man as “young and cute,” with a beard, mustache and shoulder length hair. Police were able to locate the owner of the briefcase, who said it must have been taken from his car, which had been broken into the night before. Nothing appeared missing from the case.

MAY 22

3:56 p.m. A Washington Avenue resident reported his boat and trailer stolen after discovering it missing from its parking place. It was later discovered that the man’s landlord had parked the boat in his garage because he planned to trim trees in the area.

MAY 23

2:12 p.m. A Willow Avenue resident returned home to find several gates on her property, including a dog gate, left ajar and a broken window pane in her home. The window was reinforced with a pane of plexi-glass, and entry to the home was not gained. No suspects.

MAY 24

10:34 a.m. The leader of a Lynwood Center religious center reported harassment by a neighbor. The neighbor had reportedly thrown yard debris from her property onto the center’s property and had been cursing at its caretaker. Recently someone had entered the center and thrown several glass lanterns into the garbage. Police contacted the neighbor, who said that people had actually been throwing debris onto her property. The officer informed her that she could be arrested for trespass if she crossed onto the center’s property again.

11:03 p.m. A Sunrise Drive resident reported that her son had been receiving threatening phone calls from a male caller. That night the caller tried to pick a fight with the son. The son told the caller that if he called again his mother would notify police. The caller replied with an obscene comment about the mother and said “I will slice her head off.” The woman gave police the name of a suspect. A report was forwarded to prosecutors.
