Bainbridge school bond still shy of 60 percent following Tuesday ballot count

Bainbridge Island School District’s capital bond measure has reached 59.73 percent voter approval, according to updated special election results posted on the Kitsap County Auditor’s website Tuesday.

The measure needs 60 percent approval to pass. Just 46 votes were counted since the last update, May 21.

The next ballot count update will be released Friday afternoon. A final count will be released June 2.

Results of the May 19 special election will be certified June 3.

According to county Elections Supervisor Dolores Gilmore, there are still 77 ballots from Bainbridge that have been challenged and could still be counted. Some ballots from overseas voters and deployed military personnel could still arrive through the mail.

To illustrate the margin the Bainbridge school bond measure is failing by, Gilmore said that the bond could reach 60 percent if it received 65 more “Yes” votes and no more “No” votes.

Preliminary results released May 19 showed the bond receiving 57.7 percent approval. In counts released Wednesday and Thursday last week, the measure crept to more than 59 percent approval.

The $42 million bond would fund the reconstruction of Wilkes Elementary School and district-wide capital improvements.
