Cougars scratch out a win in girls volleyball

BAINBRIDGE – The Spartans kept the Cougars on a short leash, but Holy Names Academy was able to scratch out a 3-0 victory against Bainbridge in varsity girls volleyball this week.

In play that was both fast and frantic, Bainbridge led multiple times in three sets that saw plenty of ties, extended volleys and lead changes. The Cougars kept their composure, however, and won 25-17, 25-19 and 25-22.

It was a tough match, Spartan Coach Dominique Atherley said, and Bainbridge played well, but struggled to close out sets.

Olivia Marshall had 25 digs and one ace for the Spartans, while teammate Maggie Sweeney had three aces and 11 kills.

Bainbridge was scheduled to play North Kitsap in a non-conference matchup late this week, and the Spartans go on the road to play Seattle Prep on Monday, Oct. 2 before returning home Wednesday, Oct. 4 for their second meeting of the season with Eastside Catholic.
