The next Brown Bag Lunch Lecture, “Southern Resident Killer Whales in the Salish Sea” with Susan Marie Andersson, is 11:45 a.m. Friday, May 8 at Waterfront Park Community Center.

An extended clan of Orcinus orca known as the Southern Resident Killer Whales socialize and forage in inland waters of Washington and British Columbia. They are intelligent, extremely social and undeniably charismatic, but unfortunately they are also very much at risk. Listed as endangered in 2005 their population has been slow to recover and their numbers are now at an all-time low.

Andersson, a certified marine naturalist, has watched this wonderful iconic mammal from the shores of Bainbridge Island and will be talking about why they are in danger and what needs to be done to help them recover so that they are here for our future generations to experience.

The lecture is co-sponsored by the Bainbridge Island Land Trust and the West Sound Wildlife Shelter.
