Strong showing marks season’s final Kiwanis All-Comers track meet

The young guns were quickest on the draw at Monday’s Kiwanis All-Comers track meet, the last such community event of the year, as speedy students of the Bainbridge High School cross country team dominated the jogger’s mile and gave strong showings in their age brackets afterward as well.

Ryan Cox claimed first place in the joggers mile, running it in exactly his predicted time of nine minutes.

Anna Scott was off by just one second; Mary Van Dyke by two.

Despite the student’s standout speeds, there were no slouches on the track Monday.

“On the other hand, the very young and the nearly old raced really hard,” said event coordinator Paul Benton. “Three-year-old Owen Haizlip won four heats, including [running] a 59 second in the 200, 30 seconds ahead of the runner-up.”

Meanwhile, he added, Gary Wright (74 years older than Owen) ran the 200 in 44.6 seconds, and minutes later raced the 400 in only 1:59.

“In the open 100-meter run, thirty-something Evan Saint Clair was barely beaten by high school trackster Wyatt Longley,” Benton said. “But, Saint Clair came back with a 26.5 200 — running both races in sandals.”

As usual, a few runners were unbeatable in their age categories.

Calvin Moe, 11, won five races, while 4-year-olds Dylan Van Feldt and Kaela Cole each won four.

Even more noteworthy in this final meet, however, were age group rivalries and close finishes, Benton said.

For example, he explained, Katie Oleson, 9, edged out Elizabeth Patterson in the 60 and 100, but barely lost to her in the 200, the 400 and the 60-meter hurdles.

Similar back-and-forth contests included Callan Ferebee and Shep Horrowitz (both 6); Howard Horrowitz, Julian Roger and Magnus Hauge (all 7); Charlie Hill and Jack Thompson (8); Haddie Henry and Sky Henderson (10); and Arabella Olivier and Emma Ferebee (4).

Ferebee turned in perhaps the most amazing run of the day, Benton said, racing a 400-meter lap in 1:31 for second place in the heat for Girls 9 and under, being only 4 herself.

Twelve teams crowded the track for the climax of the 4×100 relays, Benton added, with the winning boys team coming through in a fast 51.6 seconds.
