Statesmen V8 earns honors

The Hobart College varsity eight was named the Liberty League Men’s Rowing Boat of the Week following a gold medal performance at the Knecht Cup in West Windsor, New Jersey.

GENEVA, New York – The Hobart College varsity eight was named the Liberty League Men’s Rowing Boat of the Week following a gold medal performance at the Knecht Cup in West Windsor, New Jersey.

This is the third time this season that the Statesmen’s top boat — which includes Sam Zuckerman of Bainbridge Island — has been recognized by the conference.

The Hobart boat (Zuckerman, Milos Milosavljevic, Austin Letorney, Dilan Bower, Axel Witt, Matthew Sylvan, Brett Lawhon, Davis Muller and August Wherry) produced a dominant performance on Mercer Lake as they collected medals in the varsity eight event. On the first day of the competition, Hobart cruised into the semifinals, winning its heat with a time of 6:32.97, 5.02 seconds ahead of second place Bucknell. In the following morning’s semifinals, the Statesmen automatically advanced to the grand final with a first-place finish. Hobart stopped the clock at 6:09.95, 1.82 seconds ahead of Army.

That afternoon, the Statesmen were back on the water for the grand final. Hobart posted its fastest time of the weekend, 6:02.70, to claim the gold medal. Delaware finished second, 4.08 seconds behind the Statesmen. St. Joseph’s rounded out the top-three, 8.64 seconds behind Hobart.
