Cross Country

The girls’ team was well on its way to a victory in a meet with Blanchet, O’Dea, West Seattle and Cleveland High Schools last Thursday before race leaders Emily Barreca and Isabel Ferguson were directed off course, leading to a disqualification.

Annie Taylor ended up winning the race with a time of 20 minutes, 59 seconds. Courtney Odell took second place, Taylor Hebert eighth, Abby Love 10th and Maria Courtney 11th. Despite the disqualifications of the top two runners, the girls still finished second.

The boys’ team finished in third place with Willie Wenzlau as the top Bainbridge runner. His time of 17:52 was good enough for sixth overall. Sean LaBelle took eighth, John Murphy 14th, Tomas Delgado 16th and Eamon O’Keefe 20th for the boys.

Golf

Missing its two most seasoned players, Peyton Lunzer and Anna Bourland, Bainbridge got solid effort from the rest of the team in a 84-27 win at West Seattle Monday. Julia Gross and Jasmine Shattuck led the way for the Spartans, scoring 23 and 21 points. Two freshmen, Annika Van Houte and Tara Wilford, scored well for Bainbridge, tallying 20 and nine points, respectively.

Tuesday, Bainbridge lost its first match of the season to its undefeated rival Holy Names by a count of 131-110. Anna Bourland and 3A State Champion Kristin Tan battled each other through the rain soaked course all day, finishing within one shot of each other. Tan had the best round of the day, shooting a 1-under 35, while Bourland finished at even par.

The boys took on West Seattle Monday, as well. Both teams fielded a full squad, but Bainbridge won handily, by a count of 145-74. Kyle Leonard was the leader for the Spartans, shooting a 1-over 38. Carl Jonson and Will Whealdon both shot 39, while Bobby Griffin, Adam Pool and Kyle Schneider shot 40, 41 and 42, respectively.

The following day, the boys braved the rain and still managed to defeat visiting O’Dea 139-124. Whealdon bested the competition and the elements by shooting an even par 35. Griffin and Leonard both shot 39, while Rusty Furth, Jack Seidl and Davis Harrison all recorded scores of 40.

Soccer

Last Thursday, the Spartans hosted rival Eastside Catholic, playing to a 1-1 tie.

The game was scoreless for more than 30 minutes until Eastside’s Kellie Standish scored in the 31st minute.

Not until the 79th minute did the Spartans answer with a goal by captain Maddie Ginder.

The Spartans followed the hard-fought tie against Eastside Catholic by travelling to Holy Names Tuesday. Bainbridge was shut out 2-0. Emily Suhadolnik scored two goals for Holy Names in the 29th and 38th minutes.

Volleyball

Bainbridge took on Bishop Blanchet Monday and lost in three games by counts of 25-5, 25-19 and 25-16.

Nina Mutty had five kills for Bainbridge and Brigette Blacker added four kills and nine digs. Camille Moore recorded 12 assists and four digs for the Spartans, while Sarah Daquisto had three aces and five digs.

Bainbridge didn’t have its full lineup, and has yet to take the court with all its players active, said head coach Julie Miller.
