Scullers solid at Lake Stevens Regatta
Scott Griffin’s second place in junior boys singles highlighted the Bainbridge Island Rowing Club’s performance at the Northwest Sculling Regatta at Lake Stevens on Sunday. The varsity girls squad placed third. Sarah Chun (2) and Demi Murray (bow) placed fourth in girls lightweight doubles.

Spartan sluggers battle for third place
Locked in a battle for third place in the Metro League’s Mountain Division, the BHS baseball team split four games during a five-day stretch. Following an 8-2 loss at Inglemoor on Saturday, the team rebounded to knock them off 4-3 Monday. Though the Spartans outhit Lakeside 10-5 on Friday, they dropped a 5-2 decision to the Lions. The day before, Bainbridge crushed Sound Division-leading West Seattle 17-0.

Girls raise season record to 10-1
The BHS softball team tuned up for yesterday’s rematch with Holy Names – who handed the team its only defeat thus far – with two wins and a forfeit by Ingraham, to raise their season record to 10-1. The Spartans routed Lakeside 15-0 in a mercy rule-shortened five innings on Friday. Lindsay Willman drove in five runs with a homer and double and scored three times, while Brittany Wisner had a pair of RBIs. Lauren Reichert threw a one-hitter and struck out six.
West Seattle gave Bainbridge all it could handle on Thursday, holding the Spartans to two runs through five innings and notching a run in the top of the sixth. But Bainbridge erupted for four runs in the home half of the sixth and won 6-1.

Boys best Seattle Prep after 11-day layoff
While the final score might not suggest it, BHS boys soccer coach George Vukic felt that his team’s 4-0 victory over Seattle Prep did indicate a certain amount of rust following an 11-day layoff from game action. “In my view, it was much closer than a 4-0 game,” he said. Kenji Queva’s early goal gave the Spartans a 1-0 halftime lead. Queva, Kyle Scoble and Alex Raquer each added second-half tallies.
BHS WATER POLO
Strong offense leads to win over Kentridge
Paced by Anna Wood’s six goals and three steals, the girls water polo team defeated Kentridge 15-6 on Tuesday. Jeanette Swanson had four goals, Alicia Konkel three and Taylor Gawlik two. The team beat Newport 6-5 on Friday, though the Spartans had to endure some anxious moments. With 45 seconds remaining, Wood scored her third goal for a two-goal edge but Newport scored within a few seconds. Bainbridge managed to retain possession until the shot clock ran out with two seconds remaining. The Knights’ final shot from half-court careened off two Spartan defenders and the ball fell just shy of the net.

Fleet third in Northwest District ISSA championship.
Ethan Stahl with crew co-captain Sean Willerford in B varsity fleet, and co-captain Abby Hartmann with Chase Webber placed third in last weekend’s Northwest District ISSA double-handed high school fleet racing championship at Orcas Island.
JV Skippers Chris Walker and Jake Fetterman with their crews had a few good races with top three finishes. The teams finished third and seventh respectively.

Six islanders completed the Boston Marathon on Monday: Dave McVoy, 3:08:04; Peter Vosshall, 3:10:52; Jeff Phillips, 3:47:12; Sarah Grue, 3:52:37; Ron Copstead, 4:09.30; Amanda Schultz, 5:43:30.
