Spartans win ‘ugly game’

Perhaps not entirely tongue-in-cheek, BHS girls’ basketball coach Penny Gienger said, “I’m glad people stayed home last night to watch Steven Gray (whose Gonzaga team thrashed Washington State Wednesday in a televised game, with Gray scoring nine points) instead of coming to our game.”

The Spartans defeated Eastside Catholic 42-25 to open Metro League play in what Gienger termed “an ugly game. They [the Crusaders] weren’t very good, and we weren’t much better. We had a lot of turnovers, especially traveling calls.”

Anna Wood was perhaps the brightest spot for the Spartans, scoring a game-high 15 points.

“They were pretty physical and Anna took some hard shots from them, but she was steady,” Gienger said. The coach also liked the play of Rebecca Sharar, who tallied five points.

One game after setting the Spartans’ career scoring mark, Brittany Gray “had a rare off-night,” Gienger said, as the senior finished with nine points. “She didn’t get the put-backs she usually does, and most of her shots rimmed out.”

Other Bainbridge scorers: Jesse Vincent six, Kirsten Michael four, Micki Johns two, Morgan Moniz one.

After playing last night at Rainier Beach – an important game since the Vikings are a fellow Sound Division team – the Spartans travel to Ingraham on Wednesday. They host Holy Names on Friday in a battle of ranked teams, Bainbridge at No. 8, the Cougars a notch lower.
